A raft of issues emanating from Europe will have a profound effect on riders and the motorcycle industry generally. We must stand up and be heard. Some of these are driven by the EU Commission, like the new Type Approval and Market Surveillance Regulation that will see the introduction of compulsory ABS, the sealing of powertrains from the airbox, through the engine to the final drive (including the diameter and aspect ratio of the rear tyre), restrictions on the aftermarket industry, possible roadside checks by police or other government agencies to inspect emissions, detect owner 'tuning' and more.

There's EU-funded development of electronics to control and govern speeds through warning systems or, ultimately, actual throttle control.

Ireland plans compulsory, full sleeve day-glo jackets for riders and pillions, France is debating compulsory reflective/day-glo clothing. Will UK insurance companies start saying that because we weren't dressed in day-glo it's our own fault that an inattentive driver drove into us? MAG says the onus should not be on the victim.

France also wants to ban bikes over 7 years old from urban areas for environmental reasons! Their congestion is already terrible and putting more riders into cars that pollute terribly when they are stationary, is bonkers.

Bikes are part of the urban transport solution, not problem.

Enough! There will be a vote by the MEP committee discussing the above Regulation in the autumn. We need them to listen. They're meant to represent us. MAG and many others in the motorcycle community are negotiating hard with our own Government and our European representatives, but in the meantime;

Join us to keep EU Hands Off Biking, it's time for Action now!.

On the 25th September you can make your voice heard. Starting from service areas across the country, we all ride at 1pm, 45mph, using the inside lanes and disperse 20 minutes later. Negotiations are ongoing and as citizens we must be considered. This is the first time. Let's show what we could be capable of.

The list of start points is changing all the time, but as of today we can confirm the following, or see it here, visually: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=209892293638329074775.0004aaa52420ac...

Paddy from MAG (Motorcycle

Paddy from MAG (Motorcycle Action Group) was trawling the minutes of various working groups related to the EU Regulation, the following exchange turned up. It really is a discussion about fitting compulsory reverse gear to big motorbikes. Be astounded! Then be delighted that just occassionally the Commission can see sense.

####################### MCWG (motorcycle working group) Meeting, 11 January 2011 The Dutch expert requested clarification on item 12 regarding steer-ability, cornering properties and turn-ability; The Commission representative replied that this is a set of appropriate and base safety requirement for L-category vehicle steering requirements, not only for individually approved motorcycles in forexample Finland where this is a national requirement already today, but also for mass produced vehicles. In addition some provisions from UNECE regulation 97 on steering gear may be applicable, although L-category vehicles are currently not in its scope including obstacle avoidance and lane chance type of testing. He also pointed out that dependent on the size and/or weight of a motorcycle it may be useful if a reverse gear is fitted to be able to perform a U-turn with a very heavy and bigmotorcycle. The Dutch representative proposed including a weight limit for such motorcycles above which a reverse gear should be fitted to assist the driver. The French representative stated that in their national approval legislation such a weight limit to fit a reverse gear was already included. FEMA would like to rely on the market as vehicle owners would not buy such a vehicle that cannot be handled or appropriately turned owing to its high weight or big dimensions. ACEM is not in favour at all for such a limit and reverse gear requirements and supports FEMA in this respect. The Commission representative understood FEMA's and ACEM's position for two-wheel vehicles, but pointed out that requirements in this area will be developed for 3- and 4-wheel vehicles. ##################

The minutes of the whole meeting can be found here, just incase you think Paddy's making it up. He said it's good to laugh sometimes.
